Paul Curry

Paul Curry’s Story Of Growing Pains

My name is Paul Curry, I am 30 years old from Durham in the UK, and I have Ankylosing Spondylitis.

I really do battle hard against my disease every minute of every day, and some days are better than others. Work is almost impossible but it isn’t an option just to sit at home every day. I take daily doses of morphine, diazepam and anti TNF injections aswell as weekly complementary therapies (costly but effective) and daily exercise and hours of stretching to stay mobile.

I am 30 years old but have suffered enormously since I was 16. I was misdiagnosed for 11 years until I was eventually diagnosed and found a rheumatologist that would treat me with Embrel.

I now manage my pain but had to give up all forms of sport which I used to play 7 days a week at the age of 21 as the pain became too much to bare. I’m heavily involved in raising AS awareness, working alongside NASS to promote AS awareness. I am also very happily married with a wife who is extremely supportive and helps me make trips around the world to places like Thailand, hong Kong, Europe etc. It is difficult, but I’d this disease is to get worse, I want to do as much now as possible.

Unfortunately my younger brother has also been diagnosed with AS and is also being treated with Anti-TNF injections and painkillers. AS took over my body many years ago but I will not let it take over my life – yet.

If you would like any further information about me I was featured in a national newspaper 2 years ago
