Mitch Sizemore

My name is Mitch S., I am 46 years old, I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and have been dealing with A.S. for several years. I was diagnosed in 1994 but have had symptoms since the mid 80’s when I was still in the Marines. I take Humira injections weekly which has been a tremendous help for me. For many years I gave up on physical activity, most days it was hard enough just to get through a day. There were many days of being angry and depressed that I had to deal with this at such a young age. With the weekly injections I have been able to start being active again. It took me over a year to realize that I could be active again and how to manage my A.S. Over the last year I have lost over 45 pounds and I am in training right now to run in a Spartan Race in April and a Tough Mudder event in September. I fight the pain, stiffness, and fatigue every day, the workouts are hard to get through some days but I feel so much better. Even the bad days feel better if that makes sense. I am grateful and thankful that my treatments are covered through the VA. Anyway, I wanted to say thanks for doing this. Its hard to explain what A.S. is or how it affects us daily so its nice to see that you are trying to raise the awareness. A.S. may limit us, it may make the things we enjoy more difficult to accomplish but it doesn’t have to control us. I may not cross the finish line first in my races but just by finishing I will have already won.
Best wishes to all of you,
Mitch Sizemore

  1. Dear Mitch,
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Just like so many of us, we battle the darkness of this disease to be able to find acceptance in our new lives. It isn’t about the winning or being first, it is about being a part of it, or knowing you did the best you could. I love your attitude, congratulations on your accomplishments!
    Sincerely Cookie
