Mary Weise

It has been a long, long, road , as the song says! I look back and think that AS started when I was about fourteen and I went into the family MD and left with a diagnosis of bursitis on my shoulder. Then at age 22 begin to have lower back pain in my Sacrum joints and I have had many lifting injuries and several car accidents that have not helped matters. I am now 48 and kept puching for further testing from any one of my specialists. I have Degenerative Disk Disk Disease and Spinal Stenosis yet while seeing my pain MD I asked about his disease as I thought that I had seen this disease name AS, on one of my reports but nobody had ever brought it to my attention with the numerous herniated disc in my spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar). I had my family md do the work up and she agreed saying maybe she or the neurologists had missed something. Sure enough the test came back as reactive for AS. I think of the many appointments I had been to explaining the extreme discomfort of my rib cages on both sides and having problems breathing and it was just dismissed like it was all in my mind….FRUSTRATING!!! My Fanily MD sent me a letter with the results and never even called me…I felt taken as a patient that had asked her for help for many years and she couldn’t even call personally to explain and come up with a plan. I called and set up an appt with a Rheumatologist and will have my appt next month! I look back and wished I would have reviewed my past MRIS through the years and noted the word AS and acted upon it sooner…Explanation of AS has put a perspective into my life instead of the unknown.
