When I was in elementary school, I starting having these unexplainable pains in my legs. Some days it would hurt so bad that my dad would have to come carry me up the stairs to my classes. I lived with this pain all the way through graduating high school. The doctors just said I had arthritis and put me on pain meds for all those years. In August of 2010 I worked for rite aid, I could tell my pain in my legs was getting worse, then one day at work I just couldn’t stand at all anymore. Needless to say that was my last day that I worked all the way up till today. The doctors had to perform a total hip replacement on July 5, 2011. Before my THR, I was in a wheelchair for 4 months and 4 hours after my surgery I was up walking. It felt so good to be back on my own two feet. I went thru rehab and physical therapy slowly building up my strength in my legs and within 3 weeks I was walking without the use of a cane or any kind of support. I was so eager to get back to work and living a normal life working and making my own way.
Needless to say it didn’t happen. After my recovery and successful rehab from the THR, I started developing stiffness in my neck and back. My doctor referred me to a Neuroscience and spine center, they did injections in my facet joints between the vertebra in my neck, it helped with the pain but I was still stiff and couldn’t turn my head or look up at the sky. The Neuroscience center referred me to a Reumatologist and she did a few blood test on me and I tested positive for the HLA-B27 gene which is present in people who have Ankylosing Spondylitis. The Reumatologist came to the decision that after testing positive and seeing my symptoms that I indeed had AS.
Currently I am under her care, on a lot of pain meds, and currently remicade infusions. The doctors were unable to assess my spinal disease early enough to prevent permanent damage. Now they are just doing what they can to prevent it from getting worse. I don’t think it could get much worse though. I have very limited motion in my neck and back, unable to pick things up off the ground, can’t stand or sit for long periods of time, and I am currently fighting the government for my disability benefits,
I have the best lawyer in my state working for me. Hoping I can get approved and start to see some kind of income so hopefully I can have my own life one day. Don’t get me wrong seeing my parents 24/7 is awesome because some people don’t get to see them at all. I just feel limited with my dating life, etc. living at home and want my own place one day. That is my story. I am sure some people can relate. 🙂
