Edward Hatfield

My name is Edward Hatfield and I am 49 years of age and live in Florida.

I was first diagnosed with Anklosing Spondylitis around 12 years ago.  At earlier stages I was always diagnosed with Scoliosis.  After my disease got so bad I could no longer work I went to a Rheumatologist which diagnosed me.  After I was diagnosed I applied for disability and was denied several times due to not much info about the disease.  Finally after 5 years of fighting I was approved.  I am now in the severe stages of the disease and have tried most of the new drugs to no avail.. Humira, methotrexate, Enbrel, etc. The doctor said my disease has just progressed to a stage were drugs won’t help.  Wish they would have been able to diagnose sooner.  I am always in constant pain my hips, knees, and ankles.  I was a crisis, alcohol, and drug counselor for almost 12 years so I am against narcotics because of their addiction.  But looks like I have no choice now cause of the pain. At present I am taking Lortab 7.5.  Now for the good part of my life I am engaged to a wonderful woman who is disabled also and has Spina Bifida. We will be getting married on June 6, 2012.

I wish you all the best of luck and I pray for the awareness of our disease and early diagnosis.

God Bless !

  1. Dear Edward,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It was my hope that Faces would help people to receive early diagnoses with us telling our stories. I am happy to let you know that we have succeeded with that. We have two people who have been diagnosed because of our voices being heard.
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage, may you both feel the way you do now at this moment for the rest of your lives.
    Sincerely Cookie
