A.S. Face 1238: Randy Welch

Face 1238

I was diagnosed a little over a year ago when they needed to move a spinal stimulator as it had lost it’s effect. What was supposed to be a 45 minute surgery ,turned into 3.5 hours because the stimulator had to literally be broken free from the bone encasing it. The surgeon came out and told my wife that I needed to see a Rheumatologist and be tested for AS – which he was fairly certain that I had. Then I could get on a regimen of treatment that should help with the pain and maybe even arrest some of the development and progression of the disease. I had already been going to a Pain Management Doctor for about 10 years to help with my Systemic Neuropathy and previously diagnosed chronic degenerative back disease. The A.S. diagnosis helped to explain some of the pain that had heretofore been unexplained. After a trial of Humira I am now on Enbrel to control the inflammation and Opana and Morphine to assist with the pain.I am lucky in that for the most part, I am mobile. I have been in the hospital an average of 3 times a year for non A.S. related even though it is often indirectly related.

Peace be with you

  2. Thank you Randy for sharing your AS story. That’s a wild way to find out you have had AS. Glad to hear you are doing better under the AS treatment.
