A.S. Face 1776: Jacob

My name is Jacob, and I’ve been suffering with ankylosing spondylitis since I’ve been 18. I was only diagnosed about five years ago and I’m now 39. I am about 40 to 50% fused from my butt all the way to my neck. I have had reoccurring uveitis and constant Costochondritis. The AS also causes Extreme chronic fatigue. The back pain at times is unbearable and I wake up stiff every morning and it takes a while to start my day.  My sleep pattern is also affected as I don’t really sleep well due to the AS. On top of the AS I also suffer with diabetes, degenerative disc disease, panic disorder with Agoraphobia, and a couple other conditions. I’m a fighter though and will get through these.

  1. Dear Jacob,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
    Sincerely Cookie

  2. Thanks for sharing with us Jacob. I love the last line to your story! Yes we are fighters and we will get through this together. That’s the fantastic thing about this group. We lean on each other. Take care 🙂

  3. I was just diagnosed with AS about two and a half weeks ago, but I’m sure I’ve had it for over 12 years now. I’ve be reading quite a bit about possible solutions for AS and two things have been helping me quite a bit:

    1. Non-pounding exercise – movement such as walking or riding my bike has been quite helpful.
    2. Switched to a Paleo diet – I think this is a game changer for me. I ate Primal in the past, but recently upped the amount of dairy in my diet (over the last year). Now that I have gone Paleo and have removed dairy, wheat, and starch vegetables from my diet, I feel like I have come full circle.

I’m currently on steroids and methodexitrine and with this as well as my diet and exercise changes, I’m feeling about 85% back to norm in 2 1/2 weeks. I know this disease affects everyone differently, but I thought this would be good to share.
