A.S. Face 1153: Dan Smith

Face 1153NCM_00101153 Dan

I was born in 1969 in Germany. I was adopted at 13 months old.. I was found to have vitamin D rickets at a very young age.. Had many broken legs from the age of 5 to 11 yrs. of age.. Fast track to January 2000 I suffered 3 crushed vertebra.. Ten years in to that they figured out that I have AS..  They think it came on about the time of the injury.. I can not stand up straight and my neck does not turn very much.. I have been on Enbrel now for 3 months, taking it once a week.. It has helped some with the stiffness and the pain. But having it so long before being found a lot of damage is already done.. I am in a wheelchair most of the time. That is my side of AS.. Thank you again from all of us who have AS..

  2. Hi Dan. Thank you for sharing your story. I was just diagnosed with AS and I am trying to decide whether or not to start Remicade. I had a cervical cord compression with myelopathy 7 yrs ago. I had surgery ACDF C5-C7 at that time. I had been in and out of back pain (disc rupture in my lumbar spine and disc bulges and protrusions throughout my spine. I suffer from severe muscle spasms at time and I get shock like sensations in my spine randomly. A couple of times I’ve been in the hospital unable to temporarily to move without severe pain. I am 42 and have three small boys. Any advice on whether or not to start the Remicade? I’m nervous about the side effects (increase of developing cancer, meds have only been around 10 yrs, etc,).on the other hand am I just being stupid by not starting the meds???? Any personal advice would help!! Thx. Cathryn

    • Hi Cathryn, I have not tried anything but Enbrel and Baclofen for my spasms that I have. I was also worried about the side affects of Enbrel but after looking in to it and talking to my Dr. in Seattle I tried it and has helped a lot. I am 44 yrs old and have one daughter. I am sure what works for me might not work for others. I can only let you know what I use and how it works. I wish you the best of luck.
      Dan
