A.S. Face 0927: Mary Dugan
My name is Mary Dugan. I am 50 years old. I was diagnosed with AS about 10 years ago. After joining some wonderful support groups on Facebook recently I have come to the conclusion that the first signs of it was showing 20 years ago when I was pregnant with my third child. Terrible back pains during that time. Of course I wrote it off as just being pregnant. Then as I was a mother of young kids carrying them around it only stood to reason that my back would hurt. My fourth pregnancy was when I was 37 I had very painful hips and back! Again just brushed it off as being old and pregnant!! About 5 years later I got to the point where I was having a very difficult time moving. Hurting all the time and taking Advil many times through the day. I finally asked a coworker one day “if I am like this in my 40’s what am I going to be like in my 70’s”. That is when I decided to see the doctor. I was sent to a rheumy who over time was able to come up with the diagnosis of AS after degeneration showed up on X-rays. since then like every other face of AS I have battled the decisions on medications and treatments, had flares and stable times. I am grateful to have found support groups recently. A lot of things that have been going on I have read in other people’s post. It is wonderful to discover I am not alone in this journey.
