A.S. Face 0893: Tyler Smith

Face 893 I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis at age 9. I’m now 31. I try and stay as healthy and active as possible. I get along most days, but with each day the pain is unpredictable. I’ve tried many meds over the years, Humira  injections each week seem to help control my AS.

  1. Dear Tyler,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
    Sincerely Cookie

  2. Your original doctor (and your parents) should be congratulated on this early diagnosis! The only thing worse than knowing you have AS is having AS and not knowing what is causing the problems. I hope that in future AS education reaches more docs, and that all docs can be as diligent as your doc.

    • It was in my hip really bad, and I was really stiff and having trouble walking. My grandfather also had RA for many years, which I think helped with a quick diagnosis.

  3. Ah ha! You see Tyler…now Dillon’s parents (face 0898) can read your story, and feel better about Dillon’s future. Isn’t that neat how things work like that.

    • I do what I have to do to get by. I’ve worked since the age of 16, and full time after high school. I’ve worked as an Assistant Produce Manager for 15 years, and now QC for a produce warehouse. I take pain meds daily, get prednisone butsts, whatever I have to do to get by. Spring / summertime I spend as much time as I can on the bike trails, between 2-3,000 miles per year. I pay for it sometimes, and there are also days I wanna go ride but my body says no. It’s definitely disappointing sometimes!
