A.S. Face 0879: Karen L. Lawrence

Face 879Karen lawrence

I am Karen L. Lawrence, LVN, Diagnosed at age 53 after years of wondering.. I had to leave nursing after I fell and my x-rays and MRI revealed what my positive HLA-B27 warned me about almost 20 years ago. Adding AS to my osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, osteopenia and several herniated discs made me realize why I was in pain most of the time especially after exercising. I was always athletic and know I am waiting to see what my next step will be in the treatment of these diseases. After my diagnosis, I had my mom who was 87 years old at that time take the blood test because you could tell by the way she walks and her kyphosis is was a possibility that she would test positive for the HLA-B27 and yes the result was positive. Fighting these diseases are hard especially for so many years I was too young to have these kind of problems. The medical community must become aware that this disease has many ages and faces.

  1. Dear Karen,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
    Sincerely Cookie

    • Hi Cookie, I was so proud to become one of the faces of ankylosing spondylitis. I was so excited when I received my bracelet and I wore it proudly everyday. unfortunately somehow it was misplaced most likely when I had to have a procedure or some type of test as they don’t like us to wear jewelry. I would like to know if there’s a way that I could get a new bracelet. Let me know if there is a way that I can purchase one. I just don’t feel right not wearing my bracelet that you so kindly sent to me. Please let me know how I can replace it. Thank you, Karen L Lawrence

  2. Great story Karen. My 90 year old dad had heart surgery 10 years ago…and I was reading the radiologist results from his initial CT scan. Then it leaped out at me, “patient has Ankylosing Spondylitis.” It never affected him (besides colitis) but I was all like “look here-look-look-look.” Stupid HLA-B27 gene!
