A.S. Face 0838: Jenny

Face 838

My name is Jenny and I live in the Shetland Isles, UK

I am 31 years old and have 3 children. I work for a mental health charity and I own my own business running baby and toddler development classes. I also run my own dance troupe with over 50 children.

I have pain every day in my SI joint, neck and intermittently in my hands, feet and the rest of my spine. I find the hardest part of it all is the exhaustion. It has taken away my freedom to be the person and mum I wanted to be. I struggle with depression and find it hard to accept my diagnosis.

I don’t want AS to take over my life…… I’m in charge!!!

  1. Dear Jenny,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
    Sincerely Cookie

  2. Thankyou for telling your life experience with AS. I too struggle with depression (runs in the family) . I take antidepressants and they help me to cope with the daily pain of AS. Also I’ve had to learn to pace myself with my activities otherwise my pain levels increase. Every day is different isn’t it! At least life is never boring! It took me awhile to accept this condition and now I feel I finally have. Accepting and going with the flow does help with coping with this painful condition. Still have our bad and not so bad days.
It’s good to hear you have some fight in you. Best wishes with everything.

  3. Hi Jenny,

Nice to meet you, and know exactly what you mean about AS preventing you from being the mum you want to be, I hated that, my daughter is nineteen now, but we did everything we could…

I write my story on my blog, and you might be interested in my post on depression, I know it’s helped others, http://battlingankylosingspondylitis.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/having-as-is-depressing-thats-just-a-fact-but-we-dont-have-to-accept-this-we-can-find-things-which-help-us-cope-and-make-us-feel-better/
