A.S. Face 0728: Julie Brigham

Face 728

Julie Brigham, 44, Huntington Beach, CA

I have lived with the physical symptoms for years, had all negative tests for RA, MS, Lupus, Diabetes and other Ai diseases, finally discovered AS thru researching my symptoms…my doc tested for every thing else first and doubted that I had AS. I insisted she test me and I tested positive for the Hlb27 gene.  I KNEW IT. I have been taking vitamins, antioxidants, krill oil, Naproxin 2x a day for pain, 2xweek Physical therapy for my hips and back, sleep with the heating pad on my low back, walk/jog/or elliptical every day and Hot bath or hot tub sessions. This has helped deal with my pain. If I dont exercise the pain is worse during the day and upon waking up I can barely move or stand, but once I get moving, I’m a little bit better. I don’t have a Rhum. Doc yet, does anyone have any recommendations? You can reach me at julie.brigham@ymail.com   I need to make AS friends, its nice to know I’m not alone. I used to feel like a crazy complainer, now I feel validated. Thank you Cookie for bringing attention to AS Autoimmune Disease.

  1. Julie – I too went through the battery of tests to discover what was going on and remember being relieved that is was AS – I’d never heard of it, couldn’t pronounce it, how bad could it be??…then I learned! Good luck to you! It’s good to know we’re not alone.

  2. Hi beautiful!! You are not alone and always know you are beautiful inside and out. My advice on an RA doctor is to find one who you are comfortable with and has a lot of knowledge on AS….. You will be surprised on how many RA’s who do not know too much. I am 40 and been sick since I was 23…… Each patient is different and you just need a lot of Faith, Hope and Love……my AS has made it’s way up to my neck and I now sleep in a recliner. Always know that God doesn’t give us anything we can’t handle and AS patients are people who have a ton of Love and loved by many. We are fighters and we will kick AS’s butt when it comes haha my advice; always smile and know you are the one in control, not the doctors. Only you know what your body is feeling. Positive mind set is very important as we are special people :)) investigate all meds doctors prescribe you and always read what can help you……..my email is rosealie73@yahoo.com and you are welcome to contact me anytime. Take care beautiful and you are not alone 😉 God bless you!!

  3. You are very welcome…..don’t hesitate to contact me. We all need someone to release to and understands what we are going through. Trust me, I do too!! Happy tears instead of painful silent tears ;))

  4. Does anyone know of a doctor in the San Diego Area that specialize in AS?

  5. Good for you. We all need to be our own advocate. 🙂

  6. Welcome to the club Julie. Too many of us have been put in that position by doctors….we’re complainers, we’re after pills etc etc. Like many i went 20+ years before finding a doctor wise enough to test and diagnose me.Wish i could help you with finding a doctor but i’m in Virginia.Be patient and keep looking until you find one that will listen to you and completely understands this disease. Hang in there!

  7. Dear Julie,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
    Sincerely Cookie

  8. Julie, I could use some AS friends too. Please write at Stephanie.drummond@hotmail.com

  9. Update:
    Sept.2016
I have found a sympathetic Dr. in San Diego, Dr. Edward Skol. He started me on Humira, I think it was Jan 2014, and I am a new woman! I cant believe it. I am praising the Lord for him, for Humira and being out of pain, sleeping better, waking up and getting going easier. I can lay around with out pain lol.

  10. Update- just turned 48 in October and thanks to biologics (Humira) & occasional naproxen I’m doing great -feel great- 1000x better than when I first diagnosed and posted here. Thank you Cookie for giving us all a connection. I hope anyone reading this who needs hope for a treatment plan will look into Humira- it changed my life- and I was super skeptical!
