A.S. Face 0662: Caroline

Hi!  My name is Caroline, I am 47 and live on Southern California.  I was diagnosed with AS in my early thirties after suffering from symptoms since my late teens.  My symptoms started in my feet and eyes (severe bouts of iritis that always required steroid injections). I am currently on Enbrel, Indomethacin and Oxycodone as needed (which has been daily, lately!) I am HLA B-27 positive and also have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I’ve tried going off of my meds but have found that they are definitely making a difference!  It has been quite a struggle with this disease but the hardest part has been dealing with the depression, fatigue and not knowing what to expect on a day to day basis. I have been working for the last five years as a receiver in the bookstore at my church. It is getting harder and harder to get through each day but my bosses and co-workers have been more than understanding.  I am very blessed to be married to a man who has stayed beside me in this, every step of the way. He has been an incredible strength and support. That’s my story in a nutshell!  I’m very thankful for groups like this where I can go to read other people’s stories. Helps to know that other people understand.  Thank you Cookie!

  1. Dear Caroline,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.
    Sincerely Cookie

  2. The first time I read FACES Caroline (400 some ago), I said to myself “you people sound just like me!!”. Isn’t that cool! Before that I had met ony one other person who had AS. Just me is lonely, We , all together, is an exclusive club! Your husband is a blessing. Once again, the best love stories are AS love stories. Because of FACES, I met another AS’er. The best medicine I’ve ever had was to empathize and encourage her, while she does the same for me. AS has become a blessing for me.

  3. Caroline, thank you for your courage.

  4. Welcome Caroline! We share the same age gene (still 47 for a few more weeks). Don’t give up! “A merrry heart does good like a medicine.” Best wishes….

  5. Hi everyone! Thank you for your comments!
Kathy, I found a wonderful doctor who I really like. His name is Dr William Shiel and he is off of Crown Valley, in Mission Viejo. Everyone in the office is very helpful and friendly too, which I think is a HUGE plus.
Gillan, I love that verse. It’s so true! I do manage to laugh a lot, my husband being a huge part of that. He’s so dang funny. Love those endorphins!

  6. Caroline, thanks for sharing your story…..and your smile is encouraging. Keep smiling girl !!!! Stephanie. 480, I think or 380?
