A.S. Face 0407: Carol Berger

My name is Carol Berger and I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis in 2004. For awhile I didn’t try any treatments because I didn’t want to admit I was in any kind of pain, that I was too young for something like this. From 2005 thru 2009 I was also diagnosed with Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and Meniere’s Disease. I also have developed Asthma that my Pulmonary Specialist has indicated is due to my autoimmune conditions.
I received Remicade treatments from 2007 to 2010. In 2009 I learned the wife of a very close friend had Rheumatoid Arthritis as well and had undergone Remicade infusions for many years. In 2009 she was also diagnosed with a rare Bile Duct cancer and passed away in 2010. Through my connection and encouragement with her about our similar treatments and conditions I changed Rheumatologists, have been placed on a different treatment plan and in 2010 was able to run in 3 5k’s. I have unfortunately slipped backwards a little, however have begun to regain my energy levels and forge forward and am now able to go to the local YMCA almost everyday and am on the way to starting running again.
The words “I can’t” are not allowed in my vocabulary. If I have a rough day…I just try again the next day…

  1. can you tell us what other treatment you are on now? I too am on remicade but I don’t want to take it if I don’t have to. Thanks

    • I’m sorry I am just seeing your post. I have been on Lyrica since 2010 however it is mainly to treat the fibromyalgia however have found it has helped with all of my symptoms. I started out on low doses of 50mg and gradually over time inceased to 225mg 2 x/day. After much discussion with my Rheumatologist, I am now on a steady dose of 75mg 1-2 x/day and am very comfortable. I still have some days slower than others, but a huge improvement over where I was.

  2. That’s wonderful that you are able to run again. 🙂 I want some of what you have ❤

  3. Welcome and thanks for sharing your story. Face 40 Elizabeth

  4. Dear Carol,
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I have two words that do not exist in my vocabulary. Can’t and If…Best to you.
    Sincerely Cookie

That reminded me of a quote… If you think you Can’t or if you think you Can… you are right.
