A.S. Face 0344: Brennen

Brennen’s Story,
At a VERY young age, he had issues with his back. Numerous orthopedics and doctors felt is back issues stemmed from a difficult pregnancy and even more difficult labor resulting in being induced for 3 days and delivery from an emergency c-section. At 12 his back and right leg pain was different and unrelenting. We were sent to numerous doctors, blood work, casts, bone scans, x-rays the list continues. After almost a year, a doctor sent us to a rhumatologist. He immediately handed me a pamphlet on A.S.
I immediately thought, no. This guy is way off base, my son is too young. He ordered additional blood work and yet another MRI. Approximately, 2 weeks later the diagnoses was confirmed. As a mother it was one of the most heart breaking news I have ever received. My son, who is now 15 is my hero. He is relentless. Unfortunately, none of the most common treatments, enbrel, symphonie, etc.. the A.S does not respond to. He has already has had to have 2 surgeries and to meet him, you would never know. He wakes up with a smile on his face regardless of how much pain he is in.

  1. Sorry he is going though this, it isn’t fair for the younger people. I am a mother and worry about my children getting this too.

  3. I hate this disease. Why should young people be tested so! What posssible good can come out of this? Brennen, you are the reason the rest of us must push for a cure. Your strength makes my weakness look trivial. Thankyou.
