A.S. Face 0328: Karla Fernandez

I am a 35 year-old veterinary internal medicine/oncology nurse (technician) in San Mateo CA. In 2003, I was diagnosed with idiopathic hypertension 2 years post a surgical removal of a cystic terratoma that engulfed my right ovary and had to be removed. Since that time, no one could tell me why I had hypertension, anemia, and headaches. 5 years went by and I went from doctor to doctor trying to figure out why I was not feeling better. In 2008, I started to have debilitating migraines, right leg pain and sciatica, I went to a neurologist, an orthopedic surgeon, a cardiologist, and still no answers. The ortho MD recommended an MRI, and since then the pain has progressed. I went to rheumatologist, a finally a working diagnosis after a CT, MRI, bloodwork, and countless history. Autoimmune Arthritis Spondyloarthropathy -> Ankylosing Spondylitis -> UCTD. I failed Humira, Enbrel, Prednisone, Sacroiliac injections, and now on to a new plan. I have hypertension,TMJ, chronic bi-lateral sacroilitis, effusion, and the stuff that tries to keep me from living my life. I live to help animals and people. I now walk/jog to keep my mobility, but the pain keeps me in a battle of mind over matter.

  2. “The pain keeps me in a battle of mind over matter.” What an insightfull statement. Are we not all tired of seeing doctors? Are we all not tired of treatments that “do no good.” But we all keep trying. Karla, your story makes me want to keep trying, and trying, and trying.

“I live to help animals and people” so touches me too. AS’ers ARE the silver lining.

  3. Welcome Karla 🙂
Thank you for sharing your story.
