A.S. Face 0280: Amanda Bryant

My name is Amanda. I am a 30 year old female with 3 children and was recently diagnosed with A.S. I have had pain for the past three years and could never figure out why. I went to several doctors and was told you have torn cartilage in your knees, or your back is just weak from having children, to let’s put you in pt for a while to see if that helps. Nothing ever fixed the pain. I continued to keep going not only for myself, but for my family. Even to get down in the floor to play with my kids was so painful. I always need a helping hand to get up. To give my daughter a bath is awful, but I keep going.I try to hide the pain, but it’s not always easy. My children know when mommy is not feeling well. I can’t sleep at night, and mornings are HELL for me. I had enough…. As a few years passed, and I went back to the ortho doctor, I had several MRI’s of my back and knees as well as x-rays. Nothing, but you have some arthritis in your knees. They finally decided to send me to a rheumatologist. She ran so much blood work… A few days later, I was called back in. She sat me down and explained to me that my liver count was high, and I tested positive for gout, then she got to me testing positive for A.S. She explained to me that just because you test positive, that does not mean that you have it. So of course we scheduled a more extensive MRI. Again, another appt. My doctor had the look on her face and I could just tell, and of course there it is in writing… Amanda, you DO have A.S…. Now for the treatments. I have had Sterile Epidural Injections, which have not helped and now I am in decision mode of the Humira, Emberal, or the IV treatments. I am scared, but happy at the same time that I know I am not crazy. I know that I have to make a decision soon before it becomes any worse. I will NOT let this disease bring me down….I have my family as my biggest inspiration. So, I may be a face of A.S, but I will make it a smiling face of A.S.

  1. Don’t be afraid of Enbrel, Humira, or the others Amanda. The one thing I’ve noticed when reading these posts-is it seems the Rhuemy’s are “skipping over” a lot of past medicines and going right to Enbrel or Humira-which I think is a testament to their effectiveness. “Pile on” this AS and stuff it back in it’s bottle.

  2. Thank you for sharing your story. I, too, am a 30-year old mom of 3 kids, and was just diagnosed in November. I was nervous about the medication, but I began taking Humira in January and take Prednisone as needed as well. So far I have not had any side effects from the Humira, though the verdict is still out on it’s efficacy. Good luck to you as you embark on this journey!

  3. Dear Amanda,
