A.S. Face 0215: Kyle A Mother’s Hero

Kyle was diagnosed in August of 2011. During his yearly exam his doctor asked if he had any issues and he complained about his knee and lower back. After his explanation of what was going on I immediately knew. It was the same symptoms as I had at his age. I asked his doctor to test for HLA-B27. After an explanation of hip dysplasia, and how over weight kids can have this issue, I asked him to just do the test. 10 days later we had the results. HLA-B27 positive. As of right now recommended treatment is vitamins, moderate exercise and low doses of Nsaids as needed. Eventually he will need to see a Rheumatologist but for now he is ok. As a Mom you want better for your kids. Sadly I passed this illness on to 2 of my kids but hopefully there will be a cure by the time he is my age.

  1. B27 positive does not guarantee a diagnosis for AS. Let’s hope that he won’t develop a progressive AS. Worst case, hopefully by the time he grows up there will be a cure for it.

  2. I hope you son does not experience the pain at auch a young age. I also believe I have passed the illness to my children. My son has had pains in his back, knees and hips since he was 3 (now 14). My duaghter complains of backaches alot and she is only 6. My son has come back negative for the gene, but I have read that not everyone with this disease has the gene. I have not had my daughter tested yet. Best of luck to you & your children. I wish you the best

  3. Dear Kyle,
Thank you for being a part of my vision. Please know that there are people out there who care and doing everything possible to make a difference in the World of AS.
    Sincerely Cookie

  4. Yes, Mom’s do know. Thank you and I send my best to you and both.

  5. Thanks for sharing your story. ((hugs))
