My story….. I am 32 yrs old. I have 2 children. When I unexpectedly became pregant at 16, I thought preganacy would be easy! I was wrong. Looking back, I remember having mild symptoms around 13 and 14 yrs old. I played sports and remember being exahusted after games, and always hurting. I was in a horrible car accident at 15 and that started the real pain. Fortunately it subsided after months of therapy. The preganacy started the pain back up, this time it did not subside. I was not allowed to take meds for pain, so my entire back and hips felt as if they were being ripped out of me every day. The more the preganacy progressed, the more pain I was in. I was finally put on bed rest at 6 months along. Still being a high school student and determined to make a good life for my son, I home schooled myself and graduated on time. After I had my son, the pain became manageable. I got used to being in moderate pain on a daily basis. I never had flares and (unless I overdid it the day before) the pain never really got bad. In june of 2007, I was assitant coach of my sons baseball team. While at practice, I was helping the boys field the ball and caught a linedrive (with my mit!!). I turned to throw the ball to 1st base and fell to my knees. The pain was like a hot knife straight in by lower spine, into my hips and down both legs. After a few minutes, I managed to get up and hobble off the field, making the boys believe I pulled a muscle. By the time I got to my car, I was sweating and in tears. I left my son with the head coach and had my husband take me to ER. they told me I pulled a muscle in my back and sent me home with pain meds. After 3 months of this intense pain, I finally told my doctor to do something! He sent me to a rheumy, who gave me the DX the same day!! He looked at my CT from ER months ago, did STAT bloodwork and told me I had AS. I had no idea what this even meant! After alot of questions and research, I went into denial for 3 years! I would take the meds only when I absolutely needed them, I did everything the same as before and didn’t stop for a minute to think about the consequenses. In 2010 I realized this is not going to go away and I needed to take better care of myself. I began taking the meds regularly and the pain became manageable again. In January, 2012, I found a blood clot in my arm. I am scared to death of what these TNF meds are doing to me, but every time I miss a dose, the pain, so intense I can not come up with words to describe, returns. With this pain comes anxiety attacks. Currently I still work full time, and am now a single mom again. The preganancy with my daughter, in 2005, had no effect on the pain, which I am so grateful for. I am lucky the shots work for me, as I see so many that are not so lucky. One day there will be a cure and we can all be pain free!
