A.S. Face 0562: Tracie Hanson

Hello!  My name is Tracie Hanson.  I am 37 years old and was diagnosed with AS in 2008.  I have suffered from chronic pain in my upper back and neck since I was 13 years old.  I went to physical therapists, chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, acupuncturists and neurologists trying to find something other than pain killers.  A rheumatologist finally diagnosed me.  I have severe pain in my neck, back, shoulders and hips.  My upper back is partly fused.  After a long struggle of worrying about its risks, I started Enbrel two weeks ago.  So far I haven’t felt any benefit, but am hopeful it will help more than it hurts.  I have a 5 year old little boy who helps keep me young and gives me the motivation to keep on keepin on through the pain.
I too have been told I am “just getting old”, “lazy”, “out of shape”, or a “hypochondriac”.  I pray that we are able to raise awareness for this painful disease so that people better understand our struggle and we get the needed research funding we deserve.
I am thankfull for the Faces of Ankylosing Spondylitis, it feels better knowing others understand.

  1. Hi Tracie: Welcome to the group! You are right–we ALL understand here! I don’t personally know anyone with A.S., but since Cookie founded this site, I now know of 562 people with A.S. I originally thought I was alone with this disease nobody could pronounce! Now it is different and better–there are friends here to turn to who definitely understand. Best wishes to you and your son!
