A.S. Face 0531: Nina
Hi, my name is Nina and I am 33 years old. I am originally from Germany, but I’ve been living in the US since 2009. I’m also the mother of a soon to be Firstgrader. I was diagnosed with AS in November 2011 after years and years of problems with my lower back. I am also suffering from ulcerative colitis. The first time I heard of AS was when I went to get some accupuncture done. I was once more suffering from what doctors usually diagnosed with sciatica. When I told the accupuncturist that I was having UC he said that it looks like I have AS and that I should talk to my doctor. When I did, the doctor ordered some x-rays and an MRI. When the results came back he referred me to my Rheumatologist. My ileosacral joints show signs of fusing. Because of my UC I can’t take any inflammatory medications for the AS, so my rheumatologist decided to put me on Humira. I took one shot in February 2012 but haven’t been able to get back on it because of persistent sinus problems. I’m about to have sinus surgery soon and am hoping that I’ll be able to get back on Humira after that. My rheumatologist also said that I would benefit from a 100 % gluten free diet. Not so much for the AS but to get my UC under control, and by doing that slowing down my AS. I’m in the beginning stage of that diet and it is probably going to be a rocky road but I’ll do whatever it takes to get better.
